Studies Of Society And The Environment (SOSE)
The Study of Society and Environment subjects encompass Geography, History and Business Studies areas. These subjects provide students with an understanding of many aspects, past and present, of the world they live in.
Studies Of Society And The Environment (SOSE) Programs Years 7 – 8 Geography and History are offered as compulsory semester subjects.
In year 7 students explore various societies, focusing on:
- their countries of origin
- our local area
- an overview of Pre History and ancient civilisations.
- the evolving natural and human environment is examined and various societies compared.
- mapping conventions utilised in the presentation of information
- an introduction to the Australian Political System
In year 8 Geography is concerned with the study of our planet Earth. It aims to explore the character of places, the distribution of people, features and events in the world and how we interact with our environment. Topics are selected from World Geography, Mapping Skills, Forests, Antarctica and the weather.
History examines the growth of Western Civilisation during the Middle Ages including England invaders, the Norman Conquest and social development during this period.
Studies Of Society And The Environment (SOSE) Programs Years 9 - 10
In year 9, students cover History and Civics and Citizenship. The history component’s overall focus is Australian history and students undertake four major outcomes:
- Evolution from colonies to nation;
- Post-war migration and the growth of a multicultural society; self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
- the twentieth century political, social, economic and technological changes.
In year 10, students cover Geography and Economy and Society. In Geography, students undertake four outcomes:
- distribution and function of major natural systems
- changing patterns and dynamics of populations
- interaction of natural systems and human activities
- the relationships of people and the environment.
In Economy and Society, students will learn about:
- developing and applying enterprise skills and attributes
- acquiring skills and knowledge related to personal finance literacy
- Work Education. Students also undertake two weeks Work Experience to assist them in their future career and subject choices.
