Maths ExperimentMathematics Program

The College mathematics program is highly organised and offers ability-based groups in Years 7 – 10. Most students at the College undertake Mathematics at VCE in Year 12.

Mathematics Program Years 7 – 10

All students are placed into one of three levels, which are based on student performance and teacher selection. These levels may be changed during the year.

  • Basic Level – for students who find the standard core work challenging. This level provided for greater individual attention to students in smaller classes.
  • Intermediate Level – middle level mathematics for students who are proficient in most areas.
  • Advanced Level – an accelerated program, which covers core, work and provides extension material.

    Mathematics Program Years 7 – 8
At year 7 these programs include study of:

  • Space (geometry)
  • Number (whole number, arithmetic, patterns, fractions and decimals)
  • Algebra (symbolic representation and straight line graphs)
  • Measurement (perimeter, mass, time, area and volume)
  • Chance and Data (data collection and interpretation)
  • Reasoning and Strategies

At year 8 these programs include study of:

  • Space (geometry and transformations)
  • Number (directed numbers, arithmetic and estimation, indices, ratio and proportion and percentages)
  • Algebra (symbolic expressions, linear equations and linear graphs),
  • Measurement (perimeter, area and volume)
  • Chance and Data (interpreting data and probability)
  • Reasoning and Strategies.

    Mathematics Program Years 9 - 10
At year 9 these programs include study of:

  • Space (geometry)
  • Number (indices and surds)
  • Algebra (factorisation, equations, inequations, formulae and their applications, linear graphs, simultaneous equations and quadratic functions)
  • Measurement (Pythagoras theorem and trigonometry)
  • Chance and Data (statistics)
  • Reasoning and Strategies

At year 10 these programs include study of:

  • Number (indices and their application)
  • Algebra (factorisation and expansion, linear functions and quadratic functions)
  • Measurement (accuracy, area, volume and trigonometry in 2D and 3D)
  • Chance and Data (probability, statistics and variation)
  • Reasoning and Strategies.

Mathematics Program Years 11 & 12 (VCE Units 1 and 2)

  • Foundation Maths – Designed for students who do not intend to undertake Units 3 and 4 Maths.
  • General Maths – Designed for students who need Unit 1 and 2 mathematics as a course pre-requisite or who wish to proceed to Further Mathematics Units 3 and 4.
  • Mathematical Methods – This course is for students who wish to pursue a high level or Mathematical Methods in Units 3 and 4.
  • General Mathematics Specialist – This course supports Mathematical Methods students. It provides a theoretical background of a high standard, and prepares students for Specialist Mathematics Units 3 & 4.

Mathematics Program Years 12 (VCE Units 3 and 4)

  • Further Mathematics – For students who wish to have a Unit 3 and 4 maths or require any maths as a tertiary pre-requisite.
  • Mathematical Methods – a high quality year 12 mathematics that is a pre-requisite for many tertiary courses.
  • Specialist Mathematics – For students who wish to proceed to a higher-level tertiary mathematics courses. Mathematical Methods 3 and 4 is a pre-requisite for this subject. Specialist Mathematics cannot be studied on its own.

The study of Mathematics is a pre-requisite for study in many tertiary courses and offers students access to a wide variety of careers.
