Languages Other Than English (LOTE)

The languages taught at the College are:

• Japanese
• German

Many students at the College study other languages.

The College has a Sister School relationship with Japanese High School.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE ) Programs Years 7 – 8

In the junior school years of 7 and 8 all students study either German or Japanese, except those who study extra ESL or English.

In these years students learn to understand some basic spoken German or Japanese, start speaking the language, read short texts and learn to write in the language.

Language learning is complemented by cultural studies and supported by sessions using Information Technology.

Other Languages

Students may also study their first or other languages in out-of-school classes, usually conducted by the Victorian School of Languages (VSL) on Saturdays.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE ) Programs Years 9 -10

In years 9 and 10 students may choose to continue the language they began learning in junior school. They focus more on the grammar and develop skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing as their vocabulary is broadened.

Exchanges

Noble Park Secondary College has a sister school relationship with a senior secondary school in Shinminato, Japan. Students from Noble Park have an opportunity to host and visit students from Shinminato.

Students in the middle and senior classes of German are offered the opportunity to participate in exchanges with German students.

Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Program Years 11 - 12

In the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) years 11 and 12 students may choose to continue their language studies to a higher level. Students study a wide range of texts and develop skills in letter writing and write for a wider range of audiences and purposes. They participate in role-plays and interviews and conduct a detailed study of an aspect of the German or Japanese culture.

Currently those students who complete Units 3 and 4 (year 12) of a language other than English are awarded bonus points towards their tertiary entrance rank.
