English As A Second Language (ESL) Program Years 7 – 8

All students in need of ESL attend 8 periods of ESL a week. Students are withdrawn from English and LOTE (German and Japanese).

During English periods, students focus on grammar, comprehension, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Students attend a wider reading program. They also look at current issues in the world.

During LOTE periods, students study English via the Topic Approach. This assists them in the study of Geography, History and Science. Students also attend a variety of excursions.

English As A Second Language (ESL) Program Years 9 – 10

Year 9 students attend 5 periods of ESL and 3 periods of SESL (Humanities/ESL), a total of 8 periods a week. During English periods, students focus on grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students take part in a wider reading program and they also look at current issues in the world. During Humanities lessons, ESL students are withdrawn and follow the Humanities curriculum with Humanities/ESL trained teachers. In year 9, SESL students study Geography, Australian History and Civics and Citizenship.

Year 10 students attend 5 periods of ESL and 5 periods of SESL (Humanities/ESL), a total of 10 periods a week. Work Education is also taught through SESL classes. Students in year 10 are prepared for VCE by focusing on issues, text response, writing folios and mini projects. In the year 10 SESL classes, students study Geography, Economics and Society and History.

English As A Second Language (ESL) Program Years 11 – 12 (VCE – Units 1-4)

VCE ESL is fully accredited by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and is a recognised subject for tertiary entrance.

ESL students focus on issues, text response, writing folio and oral presentations. VCE ESL students have proven over the years to have an exceptionally high success rate. In the past, our ESL students have won the prestigious “CALTEX AWARD” and DUX of the college.
