The Noble Park Secondary College Chess Club is a meeting place for players of all standards, from beginners to competitive club players. Students can play friendly games against each other or participate in club competitions. There is also expert coaching for players who want to improve their chess game.
Although our school’s chess club has only recently started, we have already enjoyed some success in the interschool competitions. In the State Finals of the Interschool Chess Championship for Girls in 2019, one of our students, Haireya Abudureheman, finished in outright first place in the secondary school division. Another student, Martina Chilcumpa Diaz, came in equal second place. Together, they secured second place for Noble Park Secondary College in the School Team Competition. Our school chess team also competed in the Interschool Chess National Finals tournament held at the University of Melbourne last December. This is the first time that Noble Park Secondary College has participated in such a prestigious event. The event attracted approximately 340 primary and secondary school students, some from as far away as Perth (Western Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand). Our team performed incredibly well in their first major tournament, considering that they were facing some of the best junior chess players in the country.
In 2019, Noble Park Secondary College hosted chess players from several primary schools within the Greater Dandenong area. We were hoping to host several more chess events this year. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we had to cancel these events. However, our NPSC online chess club has been running for the last few months and is accessible for anyone looking for a friendly or competitive game. Interested players should contact the chess co-ordinator at Noble Park Secondary College for more details.
