Program Years 7 - 12
Noble Park Secondary College offers a comprehensive and innovative Careers program to all students in the school, but especially to those in Years 10 to 12. The prime aim of this program is to encourage students to explore their career options and successfully make the transition from secondary school to tertiary studies or employment. Career education is a gradual process that requires provision of a formal Work Education program, continues individual careers counselling and access to facilities and resources that will empower students to make informed decisions about their career pathways.
A well-equipped Careers room is conveniently located in the library and is manned between the hours of 9am and 3.30pm every school day by a fully qualified Careers Counsellor. Students are welcome to drop in to talk to the Careers Counsellor, Mr Tony Oldjohn about any careers related issue, or to access information about both careers and post-secondary education options. The Careers room contains an extensive range of careers literature, including books, pamphlets, university and TAFE handbooks, Job Guides and VTAC guides. It is also linked by computer to appropriate Careers software, electronic databases and web sites. Additional computers located outside the Careers room can be used under the close supervision of the Careers Counsellor to seek current careers information.
Work Education
Work Education is a compulsory part of the Year 10 curriculum. In this subject, students are introduced to the world of work, made aware of their interests and abilities, and encouraged to begin exploring their career options. Individual Vocational interest tests are used to assist students to formulate some initial ideas about future directions.
Through group work, class discussions, formal presentations and structured research, students are taught valuable job seeking skills such as resume writing and interview techniques. They analyse factors that affect the labour market and investigate the link between education and employment. All Year 10 students are required to complete a two-week work placement that reinforces their understanding of the work place and the relationship between employers and employees.
Upon their return to school, all students are individually interviewed and assisted by the Careers Counsellor to select the most appropriate VCE subjects for their selected career pathways. A VCE Information Evening is held each year to inform both students and parents about the college’s VCE program.
Year 11 & 12 Counselling
All Year 12 students receive intensive counselling and assistance with their tertiary course selections and applications. Students in Year 11 and 12 are encouraged to regularly check the Careers Noticeboard (located in the library), as there is a wide range of relevant information displayed there.
Early each year, the College hosts a Tertiary Information Day that is designed to assist VCE students with their tertiary course selections and is attended by all of the states universities, TAFE institutes and selected employers. This event acts as the starting point for most year 12 students selecting their tertiary preferences. Throughout the VTAC process, the
Careers Counsellor provides the most up to date information and guidance to all VCE students and their parents.
Noble Park Secondary College’s Careers program is committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for all its students.
Vocational Education And Training (VET)
In addition to the VCE, Noble Park Secondary College offers access to a range of vocational studies known as VET (Vocational Education and Training). These units of study involve much more practical work than normal VCE subjects and are competency based. Each program requires students to undertake specific work experience placements to gain industry skills. Upon successful completion of the two year program, students receive their VCE as well as an industry approved certificate in their chosen studies.
